Weekend on-call schedule: a fair rotation for Saturday and Sunday

Weekend cover is the shift people dislike most, so the schedule has to be visibly fair. A weekend on-call rota works with a few plain rules and one repeating order.

Five rules that keep it fair

  1. One person per weekend, Saturday and Sunday together. Splitting a weekend between two people halves each shift but doubles the hand-overs.
  2. Same order every time. With 4 people each takes one weekend in four; with 6, one in six. Nobody has to ask whose turn it is.
  3. Swaps are allowed and recorded. A swap changes the schedule everyone sees, so there is no private deal that leaves two people confused.
  4. Away dates are skipped. Holiday or leave means the next person in order covers, and the skipped person goes back in the order afterwards.
  5. Hand over on Friday, not on Saturday morning. The person on call knows before the weekend starts.

Pay or time off in lieu for weekend cover depends on your country and contract; check it with HR, this page does not give advice on it.

Make the whole year in a minute

Our free rotation schedule generator fills the year from your names, as a table, Slack text, calendar file (.ics) or Excel-ready CSV. Pick weekly; the rota then changes hands once a week and you choose the day of the hand-over.

Make the weekend rota

Post it in Slack every Friday

In Dutyroll set the rotation to weekly on Friday at the time you pick. It posts in your channel who is on call this weekend and who is next, with Skip and Swap with next buttons:

Weekend on call this week: @dana. Next: @lee.
[Skip] [Swap with next]

Note that the cadence is a hand-over once a week, not a Saturday-and-Sunday-only shift: the post names the person for the next shift, and the weekday cover is yours to define in the message or by a second rotation.

Add to Slack Free for one rotation. Pro is $9/month per workspace.

Next, Slack asks you to sign in to your workspace, then shows Dutyroll's 4 permissions before you press Allow: add the /dutyroll command, post messages, post in public channels without an invite, and see the member list (names, time zones). Dutyroll never reads messages. Not in the Slack Marketplace yet: Slack lists apps only after 10 workspaces use them. Free plan: 1 rotation, no card.

Set it up in two minutes

  1. Add Dutyroll to Slack (the workspace admin may need to approve it).
  2. In the channel where the hand-over should appear, type /dutyroll new.
  3. Fill in the form: the duty's name, the people in order, the channel, weekly (pick the day), every weekday, every 2 weeks or monthly (pick the day of the month or the last Friday, say), and the time. The time is in your Slack time zone.
  4. Dutyroll posts an announcement now, and the hand-over at the time you chose: who is on duty and who is next, with Skip and Swap with next buttons.
