Office cleaning rota template: who cleans the kitchen this week
In a small office nobody is paid to wipe the kitchen, empty the dishwasher or take out the bins. So it falls to whoever cares most, and that person gets tired. A cleaning rota fixes it: everyone takes a turn, and everyone can see whose turn it is.
Copy this rota
Six people, six weeks, then it starts again. Each week one person has the job list below.
| Week | Kitchen and bins | Fridge clear-out (Friday) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ana | Ben |
| 2 | Ben | Chris |
| 3 | Chris | Dana |
| 4 | Dana | Eli |
| 5 | Eli | Fay |
| 6 | Fay | Ana |
Replace the names. With more people, add rows. With fewer, the turns come round faster.
The weekly job list
Office cleaning, week of [date] On duty: [name] [ ] Empty the dishwasher and run it at the end of the day [ ] Wipe the kitchen surfaces and the microwave [ ] Take out the bins (general and recycling) [ ] Restock soap, paper towels and coffee [ ] Friday: bin anything old from the fridge
Five rules that keep it fair
- Everyone takes a turn, including the boss. A rota the manager skips is dead in a month.
- One name per week. Two names mean nobody does it.
- Write the job list down. "Clean up" means something different to every person.
- Swap, do not skip. If you are away, trade with the next person. Do not leave the week empty.
- Say who is next. People forget. A reminder on the day beats a spreadsheet nobody opens.
Post the rota in Slack so people see it
A rota on a wall or in a sheet is easy to miss. Dutyroll posts in your channel each week: who is on duty and who is next. It has Skip and Swap with next buttons for the weeks someone is away.
Kitchen and bins. Fridge clear-out on Friday.
[Skip] [Swap with next]
Dutyroll only posts the name. It does not check that the kitchen is clean.
Want the whole year laid out from your names? Use the free rotation schedule generator.
Add to Slack Free for one rotation. Pro is $9/month per workspace.
Next, Slack asks you to sign in to your workspace, then lists exactly 4 permissions before you press Allow. Dutyroll never reads messages:
commands: adds the /dutyroll command.chat:write: posts who is on duty.chat:write.public: posts in a public channel without being invited to it.users:read: shows names and time zones, so the post can say who is up and when.
Set it up in two minutes
- Add Dutyroll to Slack (the workspace admin may need to approve it).
- In the channel where the hand-over should appear, type
/dutyroll new. - Fill in the form: the duty's name, the people in order, the channel, weekly (pick the day), every weekday, every 2 weeks or monthly (pick the day of the month or the last Friday, say), and the time. The time is in your Slack time zone.
- Dutyroll posts an announcement now, and the hand-over at the time you chose: who is on duty and who is next, with Skip and Swap with next buttons.
What Dutyroll does not do
- It does not page or call anyone and has no escalation; it posts a message in a channel. If you need phone or SMS alerts, use a paging tool and keep Dutyroll (or not) for the visible weekly hand-over.
- It does not sync with PagerDuty, Opsgenie or calendars (it can publish the rota as a read-only calendar link, see
/dutyroll calendar), and does not update a Slack user group (@oncall) yet. - Cadences are weekly (one day), every weekday (Mon-Fri), every 2 weeks or monthly (a day of the month, or the last Friday, say, of it). No custom shift lengths. Away dates are entered in Dutyroll (Mark away, and the hand-over skips that person); there is no sync of away dates from a calendar or HR tool.
- It is new (October 2026) and not yet in the Slack Marketplace; you install it from this site.
